| Synopsis | "In Search of the Great Beast 666" documents the chilling life, impulses and journey of Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), one of the most controversial and mysterious characters of the 20th Century; infamously known as "The Wickedest Man in the World." Voiced by acting legend Joss Ackland (Watership Down, Lethal Weapon 2, White Mischief & The Hunt For Red October), this vivid portrayal unearths the barely believable and shocking facts surrounding this infamous Occultist, Spy, Poet, Dark Magician, Hedonist, Writer and accomplished Mountaineer. Was he related to US President George Bush? How was he connected to Scientology, Jack the Ripper, Winston Churchill, Hitler and Ian Fleming (creator of James Bond)? How did this man come to know so many remarkable people and why did he become the subject of fascination for generations of world-class musical icons? Under various guises and camouflaged by pseudonyms, Crowley traveled the world in his quest for supreme knowledge and ultimate power through the Occult. He reveled in what some describe as acts of sexual decadence yet recognized by others as extreme depravity. His influence on modern culture is evident yet his reputation remains shrouded in a veil of infamy. Through dramatically reconstructed period scenes, this biographical film explores the boundaries of the self appointed "Beast 666," a man who is not only said to have inspired the free-love movement, but also through his literature is notorious for replacing the Ten Commandments with just one: "do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law." |

I found this a good biographical overview of Aleister Crowley's life, and the documentary's best parts are where we see glimpses of the organizations Crowley was involved with, such as the Golden Dawn and the OTO. The glimpses of the inner politics of the groups was fascinating, and for people either studying or involved in any of the Neo-Pagan or Wiccan Traditions, this era is essential study. The documentary seems a bit thin on visual material, and I can only guess that not many pictures of Crowley survive, but there was a lot of visual repetition. I also thought it relied too heavily on Crowley's own words, and would have liked a little more impartial or corroborating source material, particularly as my understanding of Crowley is that he told a lot of outrageous stories about himself, and really lapped up his "Wickedest Man in the World" reputation. Still, this is a good place to start if you want the basics of Crowley's life and his general outlook on morality and Magick. Somewhere past his own hype is a man who influenced many later movers and shakers, such as Gerald Gardner. You won't see much of that man in this film, though.

As an author of Secret Societies Exposed, this documentary of the twisted and depraved mind of "Aleister Crowley" is "Extraordinary".. This film covers all about his lifestyles, career, accomplishments, Black Magic rituals, sexual magic deviance's and his self-proclaimed 666 twightlight events. Thus, the actors portrayals are extremely good, including the cinematography, music and film presentation! Nonetheless, apart from Aleister vulgar and sinister undertakings he was certainly and truly a well educated scholar from Cambridge University.
Unknown to many people is that Alesiter Crowley is also recognized as a traveled bohemian, poet, writer, cultured, and intelligent individual who was the first to actually write and disclose the authentic Magic formulas that are presently being used in many societies and fraternities.
His exploration travels to Egypt, China, Spain, Paris, Russia, England, Italy and the Himalayas are indications of his passion for his believes. Im not an admirer of "Aleister" but credit must be awarded to those who excel in society amid's social-economic-political obstacles.
More bizarre is to discover how "Aleister" is actually related by bloodline to the "Bush" family tree! Priceless...Like so, the film takes no preferences, and depicts his life with accurate historical accounts. This film is highly recommended to those in the OTO, Golden Dawn, OMCE, Rosicrucian's, Elus Cohen, Freemasons, Martinist Order, and Wicca practitioners.
